507 North Wall Street Shelter

SHELTER CLOSED ON JUNE 3, 2011
With the Mississippi River flood waters receding and owners able to return to their homes with their pets, this shelter was no longer needed and it closed on June 3, 2011.  We are extremely grateful for the help and support of The Humane Society of the United States and United Animal Nations whose volunteers came from all over the United States to work at this shelter, Pet Smart Charities who sent kennels, animal food and other supplies, the Adams County Sheriffs Office, and all of the local volunteers who made the operation of this facility possible.

UPDATE ON MAY 29, 2011:
Provided there are no additional problems with flooding in our area, this shelter is scheduled to close on Friday, June 3.  Only a few pets remain at this time, and owners are asked to pick up their pets by Friday, June 3.  Shelter hours are 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

UPDATE ON MAY 24, 2011:

Many local citizens affected by the flooding brought their pets to this temporary shelter and we have cared for many dogs, cats, kittens and puppies over the past  two weeks.  Now that flood waters are starting to recede, people have begun to pick up their pets and we expect all to be picked up as their owners are able to return to their homes..

The shelter is being run by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Natchez-Adams County Humane Society (NACHS), and the Adams County Sheriff's Office (ACSO).  HSUS volunteers from all over the nation have come to set up and work in this shelter over the past three weeks and they have provided care for our local pet population.  We are extremely grateful for their participation.   We are also extremely grateful for the supplies, kennels and food which has been provided through Pet Smart Charities, and for the loan of the building space by the City of Natchez.

As part of the planned transition, starting May 25 the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society will take the leadership roll at this temporary shelter and will continue to work in close association with HSUS and ACSO.   As HSUS volunteers begin to leave us to return to their own homes across the nation, many local volunteers have stepped in to work in their place, including a group of volunteers from the Isle of Capri Casino.    Trustee labor from the Adams County Jail has also been provided and we are very appreciative of Sheriff Chuck Mayfield for providing this work force and to the Trustees for their hard work and cheerful and caring attitudes as they tend to the needs of the dogs and cats in residence.

If you are interested in volunteering at this temporary shelter, please contact us at natchezpetadoptions@gmail.com.  Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

NEWS ON MAY 10, 2011:

Volunteers with United Animal Nations (UAN) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) set up a temporary emergency shelter for animals being evacuated in and around Natchez, Mississippi in advance of anticipated flooding from the Mississippi River.  This shelter has been organized and created as a cooperative effort between UAN, HSUS, the Adams County Sheriff's Office( ACSO), and the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society (NACHS).

Distinguished by their red shirts, UAN volunteers are specially trained to care for and shelter animals after they have been displaced by natural disasters or rescued from cruelty and neglect situations. Eight UAN volunteers have traveled to Natchez from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas and Washington, DC to help the animal flood victims during initial efforts, and more will arrive later.

Residents evacuating flooded areas of Mississippi and Louisiana can bring their pets to the temporary shelter at 507 North Wall Street in Natchez starting Wednesday, May 11 at 8 a.m.  The planned shelter hours are 8 AM - 6 PM, but hours and availability will increase if needed.   Safe housing will be available for all dogs and cats at no charge to the owner for the duration of this flood emergency, and there will be open visitation for owners during the normal shelter operation hours.

Pet owners who plan to bring their dogs and/or cats to this shelter should make sure that they are up to date on their rabies vaccination and have a current health certificate from a veterinarian.  Pets from flooded areas should NOT be taken to the NACHS shelter on Liberty Road.

Residents should never leave pets behind when they evacuate during a natural disaster. Pets left behind during floods can drown, get injured, fall ill, starve, die, and hamper human evacuation and rescue efforts.

If you need to report a pet in danger (in Mississippi or Louisiana), please call the Adams County Sheriffs Office at (601) 442-2752.
