Jim and Charlotte Franklins’ Happy Tail adoption story of a NACHS dog actually began with their adoption a different dog from Jackson Animal Rescue League in the fall of 2010. When they met the little blonde female Cocker Spaniel they named “Mia” she was an extremely malnourished, weak and depressed pup that had been turned into Jackson Animal Rescue League only a few days before. Jim recognized that she was in very bad shape and not able to eat the food provided by that shelter. The Franklins arranged an immediate adoption of Mia and, under the guidance of Dr. Debbie Guillory, started her on a regimen of syringe feedings. After three days of the syringe feedings, Mia was able to start eating solid food and began to regain strength. Within just a few months of her adoption, Mia had become a beautiful, blonde bombshell of a Cocker with no signs of her previous life as a malnourished pup. In April, 2011, however, Mia contracted Lyme Disease and stopped eating again. She was on a drip for three days and remained listless even after her treatment.
The NACHS adoption Happy Tail story begins at this point. While Mia was still recovering from Lyme Disease, the Franklins learned of a neutered male Cocker Spaniel at Natchez-Adams County Humane Society. When they met the solid black dog they later named “Beau”, he was thin and a little “standoffish.” His long silky coat was tangled and his beautiful amber colored eyes hinted at a good nature mixed with uncertainty about the intentions of the people around him. The couple decided to take him home to meet the convalescing Mia.
It was love at first sight for Mia and Beau. Mia immediately became alert and started playing and eating. Beau also immediately seemed much happier and completely infatuated with Mia. Although Beau came to them a little mistrustful and standoffish, the Franklins report they gave him continued affection and he changed his attitude quickly. Jim, who does his own dog grooming, soon had Beau looking his best.
Now life is great for Mia and Beau. They spend their time racing around, playing together in a fenced yard and resting in their very own heated and air-conditioned doghouse. Beau can be heard “yodeling” at night when varmints approach. They both are filled out with gleaming coats and there are no traces of either dogs’ ever having been unwanted or neglected. Both are very social and enjoy spending time with Jim and Charlotte. They have one other dog “sister,” an approximately 15 year-old deaf mixed breed named Lucy Jane that was taken in last year when she appeared in the garden drinking water out of the fountain. There’s just no doubt that each of the dogs had their lucky day when they met Jim and Charlotte Franklin.
