Adoption Process

A short application must be filled out prior to the adoption. Fees must be paid in cash or by personal check.

Dog/puppy adoption fee: $45.00

Cat/kitten adoption fee: $35.00

Adoption fees and terms for other animals (horses, birds, etc.) will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

The adoption fee includes an “exit exam” with Natchez Veterinary Clinic (next door to the shelter) for the health of the animal to be checked within 48 hours of adoption.  Natchez Veterinary Clinic gives a rabies vaccine to newly adopted pets who are over the age of 5 months.  "Exit exams" may also be performed by other local veterinarians at the expense of the adopter.  If the adopter feels that the health of the adopted pet is unsatisfactory AT THE TIME OF THE EXIT EXAM PERFORMED WITHIN 48 HOURS OF THE ADOPTION, he or she may return the pet to NACHS for a full refund.

If, at any time after the initial "exit exam",  the adopter decides that they no longer wish to keep the pet -  regardless of the reason -  the pet may be returned to NACHS.   There will be no refund given.

The adoption fee includes vaccinations and treatment for internal parasites that the pet has already received at our shelter.  We follow a veterinarian recommended schedule for vaccinations and other medications on all pets at our shelter.  At the time of adoption, recommendations may be given by the veterinarian for additional vaccines and/or medications and it will be the responsibility of the adopter to provide needed treatment.

The adoption fee includes spay or neuter surgery at a local participating veterinarian clinic.  At this time, participating veterinary clinics include Natchez Veterinary Clinic, Miss-Lou Veterinary Clinic, Gregg Veterinary Hospital, and Larkin Veterinary Clinic.  Although the surgery itself (with the participating veterinarian clinic) is paid for, the adopter will be responsible for any additional treatment or medications required at the time of surgery (usually antibiotics and pain meds).  Any animal that is of breeding age (usually 5 months) at the time of adoption must have its spay or neuter surgery before going home with its new family. Any puppy or kitten that is too young to have the surgery at the time that it is adopted will need to be taken to the veterinarian for surgery when it is old enough (cost with a participating veterinarian is still covered by the adoption fee). The adopter may choose to have the surgery done at a veterinary clinic that does not participate in our adoption program at his or her own expense.  There is an agreement between NACHS and the adopter that any adopted animal MUST have its spay/neuter surgery as a requirement for the adoption.
